Comedy of Errors
On the backdrop of a warm summer day in 1920's Spain, we have explored the whimsical nature of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors through the lens of Salvador Dali's surrealist artworks, the audience experiences the descent into madness with the characters, watching as their surroundings become more extreme as the story unfolds. Working with director Charles Pasternack throughout this theoretical design process, he encouraged us to further explore the whimsy and confusion. I became inspired by the collaboration of noted fashion designer Elsa Scaparelli and Salvador Dali. Together they made wearable art pieces that embraced and exaggerated the transgressive nature of fashion. Wanting to extrapolate on this, I asked myself who the characters are in relation to the others or what is their job, and then designed references in the costume that grow larger as the madness of the play continues. By incorporating dynamic shapes and references alongside the use of warm, bright colors, I was excited to create an homage to the visually layered and whimsical world of Dali.
