In collaboration with director Nicole Watson, this theoretical project examines The House That Will Not Stand by Marcus Gardley. As we developed our ideas for the show we wanted to focus on the universal desire for freedom. Fabric tells the story of this family and their surroundings, contrasting between binding them and setting them free. Using light, color, pattern and transparency to explore the fall of the family, we hope to showcase how fighting for survival in the face of a racist and misogynistic power structure takes its toll on women of color both in 1836 and today.
